By Subhash K. Jha, August 16, 2011 - 09:59 IST

Student Of The Year Karan Johar starts shooting today for his new directorial venture Student Of The Year with an elaborate campus song choreographed by Farah Khan.

Though Farah refuses to comment on the song, the buzz is that the three debutantes Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt and Siddharth Malhotra would be doing a high school party gig, a la Shah Rukh, Kajol and Rani's 'Koi Mil Gaya Mera Dil Gaya' in Karan's directorial debut Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.

The film's launch sees two sets of anxious parents from within the film industry Mahesh Bhatt-Soni Razdan and David-Lali Dhawan praying and crossing their fingers for their respective offspring.

Says a source, "Like all anxious parents of children who attend school or college for the first day Varun, Alia and Siddharth's parents want to be on the sets on Tuesday. But they've been requested to stay away so that the youngsters don't get self-conscious with their dance movements. And it's not just the kids' first time. Even the director Karan Johar is very nervous because he's directing newcomers for the first time. So the shooting will start on Tuesday without guests, and that includes the newcomers' parents."

However, a concession to the parental embargo was made at the last minute when it was discovered that it was Varun's father David Dhawn's birthday on Tuesday.

Says a source, "What a wonderful coincidence that David Dhawan's son embarks on his acting career on the day of his father's birthday. Karan had to make a concession and let David drop in to meet his son."

However, Mahesh Bhatt confirms his absence from his daughter's shooting. "No, I won't be there. This is the journey of the alone to the unknown. I will buy a ticket and watch her maiden performance on a single-screen cinema hall when the movie releases. Now that is a moment to look forward to, isn't it? This is the stuff that dream launches are made of. Mother Nature has given Alia the looks and the thirst to be a star and Karan has given her a dream launch. What more can she ask for? Now it is up to her to use the opportunity to the optimum."

Salman Khan Lots of speculation going on when it comes to Salman Khan's subsequent movies, after BODYGUARD. Since the actor doesn't interact with media persons, except while promoting his movies during the time of release, the media keeps coming up with stories pertaining to the new films he has signed. But the truth is something else... Once Salman is through with the promotions of BODYGUARD, the actor will embark on the shoot of Yash Raj's EK THA TIGER, which will be followed by SHER KHAN [Sohail Khan], DABANGG 2 [Arbaaz Khan] and KICK [Sajid Nadiadwala - Shirish Kunder]. These are the only films that Salman has green-lit, as of now.

Meanwhile, there's talk that Salman is writing the screenplay of DABANGG 2. But, again, the truth is something else. "Arbaaz has penned it himself and it's a mind-blowing script," Salman tells me. Look forward!

Aarakshan gets clean chit from Punjab & AP Governments

Prakash Jha can now breathe a sigh of relief as his film Aarakshan got a clean chit from the Punjab and Andhra Pradesh Governments today. The shows of the films have started from 12pm today.A special committee was set up by both the governments to see if there was anything objectionable in the film. The film was really appreciated by both the committees and has been passed by them for release with very minor changes. The film has been appreciated and cleared by the Andhra Pradesh Film Development Commission and by the committee set up by the AP Government. Prakash Jha, "It is a relief that the film is finally going to release in Andhra Pradesh and Punjab. I'm overwhelmed by the show of support from the common citizens of India, who are going to watch the film. It is reassuring to know that the right to Freedom of Expression is the real right for every Indian citizen. We are working towards getting the film released in Uttar Pradesh as well." The Supreme Court however has re-scheduled the hearing of Jha's petition for lifting the ban on his movie in Uttar Pradesh for Tuesday. The U.P. Government had banned the film's release for two months fearing strong public reaction to the anti-Dalit comments in the plot. Prakash Jha had appealed in Supreme Court to stall the ban on the film. The petition was in process but the hearing has been postponed till Tuesday. Jha is hoping to get a favorable response and decision from the Supreme Court as it makes a difference to the business of the film in Uttar Pradesh, a territory where Jha's films do well.]]>

Tense moments for Shah Rukh, Rahman, Ranbir and Anushka in London

The London riots have taken the entire world by surprise, most of all Indians who are caught in a situation over which the British government seems to have little control. On Tuesday, at an unveiling event for a motorcycle brand, A R Rahman, Shah Rukh Khan, Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma were almost caught in a complete shutdown of the city. Shailendra Singh of Percept Ltd who organized the event says, "It was providential. There we were on stage at the O2 Arena with Boris Becker and David Coulthard. The event went off like a dream. But just as we wrapped up we heard that part of London was being shut down completely due to the riots." Apparently, a panic situation arose after the event was over. While A.R Rahman and Shah Rukh seemed unfazed by the developments (both are Sufiyana in their temperament) Anushka apparently was nervous. Says a source, "Ranbir took charge. He looked after Anushka, made sure she didn't panic and that she reached her hotel safely. The city was on fire. But Ranbir didn't let Anushka feel the heat of the riots. He kept her entertained and reassured." Says Shailendra Singh from London, "It was all so cool. We Indians are used to such crisis situations. But the British government seems unequipped to handle riots. Laws here don't allow the cops to control teenagers physically. They can't even hose them down. The cops can't touch the kids. Regrettably a lot of rioters are under-age. It's not about a black boy being killed. It's become much huger." Singh admits the Bollywood entourage at the O2 Arena on Tuesday had a close shave. "We completed our event in the nick of time. All of us Shah Rukh, Ranbir, Anushka, Rahman...we were not in the best of situations. Thankfully we're all safe." Not far from London in Nottingham, a more intimate bonding is happening between Shahid Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra who are shooting for Kunal Kohli's film. The two are constantly sending assuring messages to their respective families and seem blissfully bonded by the crisis situation. Says director Kunal Kohli, "Fortunately, we're in a city that's unaffected by the riots. But it's sad to know that so much violence is happening around us."]]>

Abhay and Kalki won't be together in Shanghai

When Kalki Koechelin made her debut opposite Abhay Deol in Anurag Kashyap's Dev D, it was akin to Bollywood finding a new 'jodi' that could just be the right face for unconventional cinema. Zoya Akhtar felt the same and paired them together in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara which has now turned out to be huge as well. No wonder, with the duo being seen again in Shanghai, there are expectations of something crackling all over again. However, director Dibakar Bannerjee has done the unthinkable by resisting the temptation of pairing them together."That's true, not just Abhay and Kalki aren't opposite each other in the film, they don't even have scenes together. Now that's surprising because most filmmaker would want to carry on a winning combination", says an industry source. The source also adds that Kalki is pretty much going solo in this film which is more about varied characters than any hero-heroine rendezvous. "That's true; Kalki and I are not paired opposite each other in Shanghai. I hardly share any interaction with her on this film and have just one scene with her. In fact why just her, even with Emraan I have just one scene ", says Abhay who is all excited about the prospects of this new film of his since the principal shooting is already through. On the other hand, Kalki adds that her storyline is not quite linked to that of Abhay and hence there is no need for them to meet. "Obviously I can't tell you much about the film's plot here but Abhay and I walk in different directions here. Our storylines are not linked and we don't have any proper connection with each other. Yes I remember doing one scene with him but that's about it", says Kalki. In that case one can well expect Emraan and Kalki to share a few sizzling moments on screen if one goes by the reputation of the man. "Let me break another myth here", laughs Kalki, "There isn't really any time to sizzle because I am paired neither opposite Abhay nor Emraan in the film. Yes, I have a lot of scenes with Emraan but there is no hero-heroine stuff happening here." Guess Shanghai is pretty much changing 'Mumbai' rules here!]]>

Pankaj Kapur's Mausam in legal trouble

Pankaj Kapur's directorial debut Mausam has been one of the most anticipated films right from the day it was announced. The film starring his son Shahid Kapoor along with Sonam Kapoor is the latest film to fall prey to title rows. Pankaj's old friend and former colleague Nawman Malik claims that the title Mausam is registered under his name and filed a complaint with the Association of Motion Pictures and TV Programme Producers. To add to the situation, Malik is claiming that the story of Mausam is also his. In his complaint, Malik has alleged that he had narrated his story to Pankaj Kapur few years ago at the actor's Versova office. After four long hours, Pankaj showed interest in making a film on it. Malik further alleged Pankaj seemed so impressed with his script that he even expressed desire to feature his star son Shahid in it. But, after some time Pankaj told Malik that his son had gone out of the country and they will resume talks when Shahid returns. However, the meeting with Shahid never materialized and they all forgot about it until the day Pankaj announced his project, which sounded awfully a lot like his own, claimed Malik. Nawman Malik is a small time producer-actor. He is the producer of Mimoh Chakraborty's debut film Jimmy and has acted in films like Tridev and Vishkanya. Malik had served as an assistant to Pankaj Kapur when the latter directed the television serial Neem Ka Ped in the 1980s for Doordarshan; he had even acted alongside Pankaj Kapur in that show. Now Mallik has moved the Mumbai High Court asking for an injunction against producer Sheetal Talwar and director Pankaj Kapur for using the title 'Mausam'. He has demanded a compensation of Rs 1 crore for the title and has even submitted a digital film called Mausam, which he claims he made.]]>
